Tips to Spot and Avoid Social Security ScamsSocial Security scams have become more common, and older adults are often the target.

Scammers use various tactics to steal personal information or money by pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Here are some important tips to help you spot and avoid these scams:

Awareness Checklist: Social Security Scams

👉 Know How the SSA Contacts You: The SSA will never call you unexpectedly to ask for personal information or threaten to suspend your benefits. If you receive a call claiming to be from the SSA asking for your Social Security number or other private details, it’s a scam.

👉 Be Cautious with Unsolicited Emails or Messages: Don’t respond to unsolicited emails, text messages, or phone calls that ask for personal information. Scammers often impersonate the SSA in these messages. The SSA will never send you an email asking for sensitive information.

👉 Don’t Pay for Services: The SSA offers free services, and you should never be asked to pay to apply for benefits or make changes to your account. If someone asks you to pay upfront, it’s a red flag.

👉 Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect a scam, report it immediately to the SSA or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). They can help investigate and protect your personal information.

Stay vigilant and always question unexpected requests for personal information. Protecting yourself from Social Security scams starts with awareness and caution.
